Critchill Court Care Home residents get closer to nature

November 12, 2024

Residents at our Critchill Court Care Home in Frome, Somerset, have been getting close to nature through Wild Memories – a specialist nature group for people living with dementia or experiencing memory loss.

Run by the nature charity Froglife, Wild Memories sessions are held at Welshmill Woods and Broadway Community Gardens throughout the week.

Critchill Court has been involved with Wild Memories since the summer, where it has proved hugely popular with a wide cross-section of residents.

The sessions are designed to be welcoming and relaxed, paced to each participant’s needs and requirements, and always finishing off with tea and biscuits!

Making the most of the great outdoors

The last few sessions have seen the group make their own herbal tea, make a collage out of autumn leaves, learn how to arrange wildflowers and even cook sweetcorn over an open fire.

Participants from Critchill Court are accompanied by members of the care team to give everyone peace of mind that support is there whenever they need it.

Critchill Court residents Graham, Jack, Brian and Mary have since become Wild Memories regulars and try to attend at least once a week – always wanting to share what they have been up to with their friends and family.

Registered Manager of Critchill Court Care Home Nichola Read said:

“It has been great to see our residents enjoying themselves at Wild Memories Nature Group over the last few months.

“Many of our residents are keen gardeners and nature enthusiasts, so this was a great opportunity for them to really get stuck in outdoors in a safe and supported environment.

“At Critchill Court, we take great pride in playing a valuable role in the community and are always looking for new activities that our residents can participate in.”

Critchill Court resident Jack always enjoys the chance to get fully stuck in and takes great pride in his patch of the allotment.

He said:

“I like going out to the plot. Last time we were learning how to make cider from apples.

We had a whale of a time!
