Extra care (also known as assisted housing or supported living) is the ideal care solution for those able to live independently at home with some support.

Our extra care schemes enable you to move into a purpose built, specially adapted apartment with communal facilities and on-site care support for when you need it.

With our support, extra care housing is giving hundreds of people across England the reassurance they need to continue living autonomously in a home of their own. Our highly trained team of care experts provide flexible home care visits to many living at Whitley Court and are always on call in the event of an emergency.

They can support you with personal care, household tasks, medication management and more, depending on the level of care you need.

Whitley Court extra care housing

We know that retaining independence matters to you. That’s why our extra care housing schemes provide tailored support to help you manage your daily living needs and continue to maintain your normal lifestyle and routines.

Whitley Court in Devon was constructed in 2014 and contains purpose built flats, each with a spacious lounge, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Divided into three blocks, the scheme is monitored by our 24/7 care team who are always on hand should you need them.

The scheme benefits from a large communal lounge as well as separate TV lounge, guest facilities, ship, hairdressing salon, assisted bathing facilities and restaurant.

The development is designed for people living with low to moderate dementia and other people who need care and support. However, Whitley Court also provides independent and secure extra care housing for those who are likely to become more vulnerable over time.

Life at Whitley Court

At Whitley Court, residents live within their own home, surrounded by their furniture and possessions. The scheme is divided into three blocks that are all monitored by a 24/7 care service. This allows tenants to live independently, safe in the knowledge that help is on hand 24/7 should they need it.

When you move into this extra care scheme, you can utilise the wide range of communal spaces available. These include spacious lounges, a shop, hairdressing salon and a restaurant which is open to the public.

Activities are organised by the housing provider in partnership with the residents. Frequent events at Whitley Court include quizzes, gardening, crafts, film afternoons, and coffee mornings.

Frequently asked questions

Extra care (sometimes known as assisted living or sheltered housing) is when you own, rent or part-rent your own purpose-built home within a scheme that also provides communal spaces and care support. Our extra care services are commissioned by local authorities and are available to people living at, or moving to, selected schemes.

Living in your own self-contained, fully accessible home enables you to maintain your independence whilst benefiting from optional care and support packages.

Unlike home care, extra care offers a living environment tailored to your care needs and fitted with emergency alarms. In addition to flexible visits, extra care provides the added reassurance of an on-site care team available 24/7, making it the ideal middle ground between living at home and moving into a care home.

If you live in an extra care housing scheme such as Whitley Court, you can receive care from our on-site care team. They can support you to continue living independently in your home. This could be through support with:
– Personal care
– Household tasks
– Meal preparation
– Washing and dressing
– Companionship
The care you receive is bespoke to you and tailored to your needs and wishes. To find out how we can support you, call our team today and book a free, no-obligation care assessment.

Unlike sheltered housing, extra care schemes are regulated and rated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. They inspect and regulate all fully managed care services, including our extra care schemes. Each inspection asked five key questions: Are they safe? Are they effective? Are they caring? Are they responsive to people’s needs? And are they well-led?

This level of quality assurance is not possible from an introductory home care agency who are unregulated and only take responsibility for putting you in touch with a self-employed care worker.

All reports can be found on the CQC website.

The cost of extra care will vary depending on whether you are renting or buying your accommodation, the scheme you choose and the level of care you require.

Typically, extra care costs are significantly lower than the cost of a care home which usually starts at £895 per week. With extra care, you pay only for the care you need. Unlike in a care home where you pay a flat fee for 24-hour care, in extra care you pay per hour of care used, with flexible visits that can increase or decrease based on your needs.

You may be able to get help with your rent and/or service charges through Housing Benefit (if you are renting) or Pension Credit (if you own your own home). Help with council tax and the cost of care may also be available through your local authority.

If you live in an extra care scheme, home care visits will be provided by the on-site care team. These are often commissioned by the local authority in partnership with the housing provider. Before arranging care, it is important to find out which care company provides care to your scheme.

If you live at Whitley Court, we can help you set up care immediately. All you have to do is call our team of expert care advisors, or talk to your local office team. They will listen to your needs and wishes before booking in your free, no obligation care assessment to determine what level of support you need. Once this is confirmed, you are all set to go. In addition to regular care visits, you will also receive ongoing support from a designated Care Coordinator who will be your point of call for any questions or concerns.

Extra care gives couples the option to continue living together in a home of their own despite different levels of care needs.

With on-site support, you or your loved one can receive regular home care visits from our professional team of care workers. Whether it’s help with household tasks, personal care or companionship while one of you goes out, we can put in place flexible care that enables you to continue living together.

This cannot be guaranteed by other full-time care options such as a care home which may see you and your loved one placed in different rooms or even different areas of the home.
