It’s been over 35 years since Agincare’s Founder and Chairman Derek Luckhurst started his first care home in Weymouth.
Since then we’ve grown to be one of the largest independent care groups employing 4,000 people at over 85 locations nationwide, but remain family-owned and have never lost sight of putting people at the heart of everything we do.
We place great value on being a well-run and sustainable care provider, committed to a long-term future delivering person-centred high-quality care in the community. That means we’ll be around today, tomorrow and in years to come, giving peace of mind to everyone that draws on our high quality, personalised services.
Agincare is committed to playing a full and active role in the community, whether it’s raising money for good causes, leading regeneration projects, attracting visitors or supporting the arts and the local economy. Our directors take on voluntary roles in smaller local organisations where their skills and networks can be shared for the good of the community.
Driving regeneration
Agincare’s Founder and Chairman Derek Luckhurst is the driving force behind the Castletown Regeneration Project in the area around our head office on Portland, Dorset. It has brought many improvements to the area, attracting visitors, and boosting the local economy.
This includes substantial interest in an award-winning Tourist Information Centre, Crabbers’ Wharf holiday apartments and the popular Castletown D-Day Centre.
As a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, Castletown D-Day Centre relies on volunteers, admission income and community goodwill to deliver incredible immersive experiences to thousands of people every year.
The centre has won a Travellers’ Choice Trip Advisor award for consistently earning top reviews on Tripadvisor. The centre is a funding partner of a project to improve and preserve Portland High Angle Battery – a historically important site and scheduled monument.
Crabbers’ Wharf is an award-winning development on Portland that includes holiday apartments and a Tourist Information Centre.
It welcomes guests throughout the year, supporting shops, cafes and other local businesses, with thousands of people annually visiting the Tourist Information Centre, and using the My Girl ferry to and from Weymouth.
Agincare’s stylish new Riggers Row building, which accommodates home care teams, comes complete with a free-to-use car park, and charging points for electric cars.
It is set to be joined by new Black Barge development, which features a new restaurant, office space and storage for water sports enthusiasts.
Agincare’s Chief Executive Raina Summerson is a Trustee of Eden Portland, an exciting project that is working in partnership with the internationally renowned Eden Project team to bring a world class visitor attraction to the area. The project combines the natural wonder of the Jurassic Coast with a need for local regeneration and way to inspire and engage the public in biodiversity loss.
Boosting the local economy
With our Head Office based in Dorset, Agincare is one of the largest employers in the wider region and we take our responsibility to supporting the local economy seriously. We create jobs in the locations where we operate, supporting local economies around the country.
Agincare Chief Executive Raina Summerson is Chair of Portland Economic Vision Board, which supports transformation of the area’s economy, driving growth and jobs. The board engages local business and works with the local councils, MPS, Local Enterprise Partnership and government to attract inward investment and boost economic development.
Supporting good causes
Our teams across the country are also passionate about supporting good causes close to their hearts. They’ve run, raffled, rode, danced and baked their way to raising thousands of pounds for good causes, including the Care Workers’ Charity, Save the Children, Alzheimer’s Society, MIND and many others. Others, like our head office team who carry out beach cleans on Portland’s Jurassic Coast, also support their local communities in other ways too.
Agincare Director Adam Luckhurst has followed in his father Derek’s long-term commitment to the local community. Adam is a key member, and recent Chairman of Weymouth and Portland Round Table, and is passionate about bringing people together to raise money for the good of the area. The round table is a registered charity made up of committed volunteers that all want to make a positive difference to their local area. In 2023, the Round Table, supported by Agincare head office teams, raised over £20,000 for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and other causes.
Agincare is proud to be a Founding Member of the £500 Challenge – a fundraising campaign launched by The Care Workers’ Charity (CWC) to ensure that there is a helping hand for care workers in difficult times.
Backing arts and culture
Agincare Chief Executive Raina Summerson is the Chair of Portland’s internationally acclaimed b-side arts organisation. As a long-standing supporter, Raina brings vast experience of community engagement and business leadership to b-side.
Agincare’s Head Office team joins in with b-side events too, hosting art installations and welcoming visitors during b-side’s annual festival. It brings thousands to the Island, supporting the local economy and enriching Portland’s cultural experience.
Environmental commitment
Agincare is committed to protecting the environment, the health and safety of our employees, and the community in which we operate. Our environmental policy seeks continual improvement throughout our business operations to lessen our impact on the local and global environment by conserving energy, water and other natural resources; as well as reducing waste generation and carrying out recycling.
We are committed to environmental excellence and pollution prevention, meeting or exceeding all environmental regulatory requirements, energy saving, reducing our carbon footprint and harnessing our purchasing power.
